Some of the First Things You Might Want to Know

 

  1. Why should I go to law school? Other than law firms, where do lawyers work?
  2. When should I go to law school – right out of college or after working for a few years?
  3. How many hours do you have to study a day? Will I have time for a job? Is it manageable to have a job while in school?
  4. Does it matter what undergraduate major I select if I want to attend law school?
  5. How do I choose the right law school for me? Big school? Small school? Special areas of concentration? Location?
  6. How much should scholarships and other financial burdens/compensations affect my decision of a school?
  7. How do I best present myself in an application?
  8. What kind of extra-curricular activities do law schools consider?
  9. Once I have decided on a law school, what should I do to best prepare myself for the first day (prep courses, orientations, summer reading, etc.)?
  10. What habits will I need to develop or improve to be successful in law school? How can I develop those habits before the first day of class?

Some of the Other Things You Might Want to Know

  1. How did you decide where you wanted to practice- firm, government, corporation, public interest?
  2. What is it like working at a firm, for the government, for a corporation?
  3. If I’m not interested in a law firm long term, should I start at one anyway?
  4. How can I find out about law firm jobs and “non traditional” law jobs (public interest, government, etc)?
  5. What are the benefits and pitfalls of choosing a job in each of those?
  6. What are the benefits of having a judicial clerkship?
  7. How do I choose a practice area? When do I have do choose?
